The emperor is the largest penguin in the world and they live at Antarctica. Is the coldest continent on earth, it is the 5th largest continent as well. Penguin’s habitat is Antarctica and the surrounding sea.
Emperor penguins can grow up to 1.3m tall and have very thick fat skin called blubber to keep them warm. When it is windy, penguins snuggle together. Penguin can stand up to 1.2m tall. They can swim up to 19 km/h in water which is very fast.
Penguins survive with the help of blood cells which have a special type of hemglobin that allow them to survive at low oxygen levels.
Female penguins lay eggs at beginning of winter. Eggs are kept off ice because they can fall and crack. Eggs hatch after around 65 days.
Female penguins hunt for food all winter for the baby. They hunt for fish, squid and krill [shrimp like creatures]. Male penguins eat nothing during this time. Then male penguins go out and feed themselves when the female returns to feed the baby.
Penguin’s predators are leopard seal, skua and orcas.
Adult’s penguins can travel to 90km to reach breeding grounds. Male’s carry the egg across the ice. Chick’s hatch and they weigh only about 150-200g. Emperor penguins go to the sea in January and February. Some penguins sleep on icebergs and some sleep on the floating sea.
